Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi 002This strangepurple and green object is not a ship from outer space but a delightful veggie called kohlrabi. To prepare it, cut off all the strange appendages and peel it. The inner flesh is white-ish.

You can eat it raw in salads or cook it in a variety of manners. Personally, I dice it then saute it with butter and garlic. If you want to be more adventurous, try some of the recipes listed in the Simply Recipe blog: http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/kohlrabi/.

We ran a few of these recipes in a recent edition of the newsletter. To view the whole list, click on this link:

Freezing Fresh Produce

Sometimes, the bounty of a summer harvest is just too much of a good thing.

CSA member and newsletter editor Michele Decoteau discovered a great Web site for anyone interested in freezing their produce:

The site contains basic information about freezing, as well as detailed information for freezing specific vegetables, fruits, and herbs.

There are related links for topics such as food safety and pickling.

Children’s tomato

Children's TomatoAt Silvermine Farm, the Children’s garden is growing nicely. According to Martha, it is the best spot on the whole farm for tomatoes this year. Not only are the tomatoes growing like bushes, but the sun flowers are out.
