We’ve had a few members wondering why there has been so little eggplant this year. Here’s what the farmers had to say:
Martha at Silvermine Farm: I started my eggplant in plenty of time, got it transplanted into the field appropriately, and have waited with bated breath for production while weeding and keeping bugs off. Last week, about 3 weeks late according to the maturity of the variety I grew, I had my first real production. From the feedback we received earlier this year when a crop was in short supply, it was distributed to one of the three sections of members (large, small #1 and small #2 are the three sections) instead of a ridiculously small portion to everyone. Some crops don’t grow as expected and eggplant was the crop this year. I may have more, and if so it will be distributed equitably. If not, then this would be considered a crop failure.
Katherine at Sweet Birch Farm: Eggplant does not like the cold rainy weather we’ve had this summer, and ours have been producing very, very slowly and the fruits have been smaller than normal. This week, as in past weeks, the eggplant we had was added to the exchange box.
